HeartSine Technologies Inc.
The company was founded in 1997 as a spin-out from the University of Ulster but the antecedence of the technology goes back to the development of the world’s first mobile defibrillator at the Royal Victoria Hospital in the late 1960’s. HeartSine Inc is headquartered in the USA with an R&D and assembly subsidiary based in Belfast.
There are currently two HeartSine products in the market which detect and treat sudden cardiac arrest. In particular, these products – known as Automated External Defibrillators (“AEDs”) – enable semi-trained or minimally trained individual to react to a heart attack before the arrival of professional support. Speed of response to a sudden cardiac arrest is a major factor in the likelihood of a successful recovery.
There are a number of leading edge technical developments being pursued and the company plans to launch further innovative products to expand the portfolio over the next year.
In addition to the AED products, HeartSine is also working on a new approach for the treatment of Atrial Fibrillation (“AF”). This involves a low energy passive implantable system which will treat AF and initial pre-clinical trials have shown very positive results.
